Full disclaimer, I am a MASSIVE fan of the boys. My first ever gig was Green Day, I have them inked on my skin and Billie Joe Armstrong is still my idol (… it’s not a coincidence that my main guitar of choice when fronting my wedding band ‘The Hustle’ is a Billie Joe Armstrong Les Paul Junior!).
So as someone who has lived and breathed Green Day since being single digits in age, as well as having worked and performed at hundreds and hundreds of weddings as a singing guitarist in a pop punk wedding band, I feel pretty well placed to advise on which Green Day songs work best at weddings! Not only that… one of the songs in this list is actually the first dance song at my own wedding! Read on to find out which one we chose <3
Green Day songs don’t have to be romantic to work at a wedding, although some are. Here’s a mix of tracks that can work for your wedding ceremony, walking down the aisle, your first dance song and of course, for your live wedding band to perform if you’re having one.
1. Last Night On Earth
In a Billboard article from 2009, Billie Joe says;
“Last Night On Earth is a love song I wrote for my wife. I wrote it on piano and then sang it. It’s one of those things where it’s only directed toward one person, like an intimate moment.”
It’s easily one of the most beautiful and poignant love songs that the boys have ever put together, and a complete gem amongst the myriad of absolute bangers on 21st Century Breakdown.
With lyrics such as;
“You are the moonlight of my life every night
Givin’ all my love to you…”
… What more do you want?!
It’s an impressive track in so many ways and really well suited for a special Green Day first dance song, or wedding ceremony aisle walk. One of the most popular picks for Green Day fans getting married.
2. Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)
Unsurprisingly, Good Riddance is easily one of the most popular Green Day songs for any big occasion.
What many people don’t know is the true meaning of the song. Written here, Billie Joe says “It’s about an ex-girlfriend who had moved to Ecuador. In the song, I tried to be level-headed about her leaving, even though I was completely pissed off. So I named it ‘Good Riddance’ just to express my anger.”
Has it stopped people from using the song as a romantic first dance or during their wedding ceremony? Absolutely not.
This is one of those tracks that is so big, couples have found their own meanings within it and it is an incredible choice for any wedding party!
3. Basket Case
Here’s where things get a little fun. At the time of writing this, Basket Case has just surpassed one billion streams on Spotify, joining Spotify’s Billions Club. This easily makes it the most popular track by the boys, and one that will definitely induce a bouncing dance floor at your wedding.
It’s incredibly iconic and a mainstay in our wedding band sets, nicely sitting along a few other pop-punk wedding tracks for those looking to have a little mosh.
So much fun, ridiculous energy and a massive crowd-pleaser!
4. Welcome To Paradise
Dookie is simply symbolic when it comes to Green Day albums, and nothing encapsulates this era more than Welcome To Paradise. One of the best tracks of the 90s.
The opening riff is just something else and it’s fast paced simplicity makes it such an epic song for a high energy wedding party!
It’s also more of a niche pick over obvious tracks like Basket Case for more die hard fans, whilst still remaining popular enough to keep the dance floor full.
5. Poprocks & Coke
Poprocks & Coke is just so cute.
An adorable 3 chord song at 2:38 in length, it’s a perfectly sized nugget of feel good Green Day that can fit in almost anywhere on a wedding day!
It’s a lyrically appropriate and very versatile tune that is definitely worth considering.
6. When It’s Time
‘When It’s Time’ has a bit of a weird history. It was bounced around after being originally penned in 1992, during the Kerplunk era, “When It’s Time” waited until the band’s fifth studio album, Nimrod (1997), for its official studio recording. Initially conceived as a piano demo, it was considered for inclusion on Dookie but remained unreleased!
The track resurfaced during the sessions for American Idiot but ultimately didn’t even secure a spot on the album. Finally, it found its home on American Idiot: The Original Broadway Cast Recording, marking its official release.
A song written by Billie Joe Armstrong for his now-wife, Adrienne, when he was 19 years old – it’s the perfect Green Day love song for a wedding!
7. Ordinary World
Perhaps a song and project that received mixed opinions from both Green Day and non-Green Day fans, but
It wasn’t originally written to be the closer for ‘Revolution Radio’, but for the soundtrack of the Ordinary World Movie.
Whilst not strictly a love song, it still has great vibes and that acoustic feel that works really well for a Green Day first dance song or wedding aisle walk.
8. Church On Sunday
One of the most underrated songs on one of the most underrated Green Day albums (Warning, 2000), Church On Sunday is such a cool choice for a wedding track.
Whether you’re religious or not, this track explores both sides in a fun and upbeat way. At its roots, it’s a heartfelt song about compromising to make a relationship you care about work! Very appropriate.
9. American Idiot
Politically punchy, punky and always getting a positive reaction when performed by a live band.
This track is one of the band’s most signature songs and is a rip-roaring addition for any wedding!
Include a good sprinkling of Billie Joe ‘Hey-oh!’s in the bridge and you’re good to go!
10. Are We The Waiting
Leaving what I consider one of the best until last. This is actually the song we chose for our own first dance song!
It’s perfectly placed for a special song and has that romantic sway that amazing for dancing to. Would strongly recommend if you’re looking for a Green Day song for your big day!
